Visiting Aigues-Mortes and the Salins du Midi

A memorable half or full-day outing from the house, combining one of southern France’s best-preserved medieval towns with the extraordinary salt landscapes of the Camargue.

If you are choosing just one outing that captures the character of this part of the world, Aigues-Mortes is a strong contender. The town is famous for its striking medieval ramparts, built in the thirteenth century under Saint Louis, and it still feels enclosed, distinct and beautifully self-contained.

Start with time inside the old town itself. The lanes are compact, attractive and easy to stroll, with cafés, small shops and plenty of opportunities to pause rather than rush. Even a gentle circuit around the exterior walls is worthwhile, but if you enjoy history the ramparts are what make the visit so memorable. From above, you begin to understand how the town sits within a wider landscape of marsh, water and salt.

The second half of the outing belongs to the Salins du Midi, just outside the town. This is where the scenery turns unmistakably Camarguais. The saltworks are known for pale pink water, blinding white salt mounds and a huge open horizon that feels both industrial and dreamlike. Official visitor information highlights several ways to discover the site, including a small tourist train that takes roughly one hour and fifteen minutes and includes the iconic stop at the salt mound.

What makes the pairing work so well is the contrast. In a single day, you move from towers, gates and stone streets to a landscape shaped by mineral light and geometry. It is also a useful reminder that the Camargue is not only beaches, flamingos and horses. It is a working landscape with traditions, labour and its own visual rhythm.

For a simple plan, arrive in the morning, spend a little time wandering and perhaps have lunch within the walls, then head to the saltworks once the day softens. Comfortable shoes, sun protection and water are worth bringing, especially in warmer months. If you enjoy photography, this is one of the easiest nearby outings for strong images: warm stone in town, soft pinks in the marshes and dazzling whites across the salt.
